Has an undergraduate degree in soil science from the Chapingo Autonomous University in Mexico and a Master Degree in soil science from the UNAM. He has been a forestry researcher for the last 29 years at the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales y Agropecuarias (INIFAP), México, working on the applications of Geographic Information Science and Technology to natural resources management and conservation.
